Join the NY Crime Victims Legal Network in recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

Wear purple for "Purple Thursday" on October 20th, select an event to attend, learn about domestic violence in New York State, read the insights from an OPDV listening series, find resources for the LGBTQ+ community, and read a study on the link between breast cancer and domestic violence. Don't forget to make yourself a priority and implement the list of self-care tips!

Domestic Violence in NYS

Did you know that 31.7% of New York women and 29% of New York men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes? To learn more about domestic violence in New York State visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence fact sheet at the button below.

Upcoming Events

The National Network to End Domestic Violence campaign theme this year is #Every1KnowsSome1, which strives to highlight how common domestic violence is and that it is more than physical violence. Join their Week of Action October 17-23, 2022 to engage in starting a national conversation.

You can also visit NYSCADV's calendar of events or CVLN's Advocate Gateway for events happening this month!

Survivor Listening Series

In 2021, the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, conducted the first Survivor Listening Sessions to inform the agency’s efforts to move New York State towards a survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive domestic violence services delivery system. OPDV has institutionalized these Listening Sessions with survivors of domestic violence as an ongoing initiative. Click the button below to read the insights from the first session.

Self-care for YOU!

"If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete."

We recognize all of your wonderful hard work as advocates and practitioners and encourage you to take care of yourself. Whether it be a creative hobby, exercise, a bubble bath, firm boundaries, or a debrief with a co-worker, it is important to remember to make yourself a priority.

Abuse in LGBTQ+ Communities

As a result of the various injustices faced by LGBTQ+ people, they are four times more likely to experience violence in their life than their straight counterparts, and due to the stress and threat of discrimination, they are twice as likely to experience mental health issues.

No one deserves to experience abuse, and everyone deserves to be in a healthy and loving relationship. Read more about challenges the LGBTQ+ community face and resources available at the button below.

Link between Breast Cancer & Domestic Violence

Did you know that there may be a link between physical trauma to the breast and the development of breast cancer? Read this study in the National Institute of Health’s library and a blog from a Patient Navigator in a cancer center to learn more.
