Empire Justice Center's signature fundraising event, a Celebration of Leadership, is less than one month away! Join us on Thursday, November 17 from 5:30-8:30 PM to recognize leaders in New York State for their contributions to access to justice. We'll celebrate the accomplishments of T. Andrew Brown, Laura Gonzalez-Murphy and, posthumously, Empire Justice Center alum, and social justice advocate, Don Friedman with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and networking at the Cornerstone at the Plaza in downtown Albany. Sponsor the event or place an ad in the event journal by clicking HERE. Sponsorships come with many benefits and support the critical work that Empire Justice Center does statewide by raising unrestricted funding for systemic work that is vital to making the law work for all New Yorkers. About the Honorees T. Andrew Brown is a Founder and Managing Partner of Rochester-based Brown Hutchinson LLP. He served as the Corporation Counsel for the City of Rochester, Deputy County Attorney for Monroe County, Advisor to the County Executive, former General Counsel of the National Bar Association, and is past President of the Monroe County Bar Association, the Rochester Black Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. Laura Gonzalez-Murphy is the Executive Director of the NYS Office for New Americans (ONA), and previously was the Director of NY State Immigration Policy and Research, serving as lead policy advisor on the State's response to federal immigration policies. She is also a former Empire Justice Board Member. Laura has led the design and implementation of unique programs that empower immigrant families and provide critical resources. Don Friedman was the inaugural managing attorney and founder of Empire Justice Center’s Long Island office at the Public Advocacy Center on the Touro Law School campus from 2007 until his retirement in May 2020. Don was a well-known name among welfare advocates across the state. His depth of knowledge, combined with his spot-on sense of humor, always drew crowds to his training sessions. Don dedicated his life to empowering underserved communities and advocating on behalf of low-income people from the day he left Harvard Law School in 1977. |
