Friends, I am sure many of you are recovering, having stayed up Tuesday night watching election results pour in. Others went to bed early, unable to watch and hoping that the fearmongering and vitriol would not win the day. We all manage our stress and emotions differently. Now that the results are in, we know that many of the communities we are part of, and we fight for will be more vulnerable than before. We also know that here in New York, we have strong laws and protections and a vibrant and active social justice community. Now is a moment where we need to take a beat to process with our friends and loved ones, acknowledge that many of us may feel scared, may be worried about ourselves, our families and friends in other parts of the country. So, let’s do that. And then, we need to focus on the work we do together. The work of Empire Justice Center is critical, important, and part of the solution. We must stay focused on serving our client communities and on our systems change work to protect and strengthen their rights. We need to move forward. We are in this together. We will adapt and then push harder than ever, using the law as our tool to ensure justice – and to quote our tagline - to make the law work for all New Yorkers, especially those who need its protection the most.
